Weekend activities 18th/19th July
Saturday 18th.
Harvested and measured a variety of carrots from the tunnel beds and a few from the outdoor beds. Since the rains of the last couple of weeks the outdoor carrots have come on alot and have at least doubled their stem length, although the carrot development still lags the indoor beds. This suggests i did not give them sufficient moisture, although generally the outdoor beds seemed always to be better at holding the moisture than the indoor ones.
Looked at the onions, but don't want to pull up any, just for the purposes of measurements. They are generally swelling nicely and the seed onions are also progressing well. Also dug some more Orla potatoes to have with the carrots for dinner. See photos No.259-337 here: http://picasaweb.google.com/jjohnflynn/Polytunnel1
On the remaining 3 spans of the tunnel i removed the weeds that had developed around the edges of the black plastic that was covering the floor. I pulled them all by hand, taking as many roots as possible and added them to the compost heap. As with the other beds the ground was covered with black plastic and then mulched over with gravel.
